A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
