Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of major explosions rocking Tehran, amid claims from Israel that it had conducted a preemptive strike.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The nature of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially provide further details.
Background: Rising Strains and Recent Events
This event takes place against a background of severely escalated strains in the region. Major events preceding this attack include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of American warships in the region, featuring the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest talks between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials dismissed claims about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
