British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
