Award Recognition

The group are connecting from home, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the honor isn't lost on the trio.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "However we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The record emerged from a period of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The words track endings and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they are becoming.

"I love summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to make an effort in ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed toughness demanded a fresh approach – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The band's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating misadventures.

One man broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Future

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide fan base.

Yet the sister act will consistently be their number one commitment.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," shares Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
